German wirehaired pointer - Brief History and Standards
|
The German wirehaired pointer is
a rough coated pointing dog that began being bred at the end of
the 19th Century based on the ideas of "Hegewald" (Sigismund
Freiherr von Zedlitz and Neukirch). A dog that excels through his
weatherproof coat and varied usage in all spheres of practical hunting
the German wirehaired pointer is the most versatile of the HPR (Hunt,
Point, Retrieve) subgroup of gundogs. In their native Germany, they
are the most popular gundog and the 3rd most popular dog breed overall
(behind the German Shepherd Dog and the Dachshund).
Developed in Germany in the mid-19th
century from the best of the rough haired types (Poodlepointer,
Griffon Korthals and Deutsch Stichelhaar) with an infusion of German
Shorthaired Pointer, the breed was originally used in Germany to
hunt wild boar and feral cats. It stands about 24 in. (61 cm) high
at the shoulder and weighs about 60 lb (27 kg). Its harsh, wiry
outercoat is flat-lying and approximately 1.5 in. (3.8 cm) long.
The woolly undercoat is very dense in winter but thins out in the
warmer months. Its color is usually liver and white or liver with
white spotting or ticking, while the head and ears are brown. The
tail is docked. The German wirehaired pointer is bred as an all-purpose
retrieving pointer; its tough double coat allows it to hunt in the
roughest underbrush and to withstand the iciest water
The breed was imported into the United
States in the 1920's and admitted into AKC's studbook in 1959. The
US standard wants smaller, more moderately angled dogs than the
UK or German standards. Black coloration is nor permitted, neither
are yellow eyes. US dogs have steeper shoulders and shorter upper
arms than the equivalents in UK and FCI countries.
By the nature of their breeding these
dogs are extremely biddable, intelligent and adaptable. Like any
large, powerful hunting dog they require a lot of exercise but they
will adapt to a small yard and long walks. While basic obedience
training is a must German Wirehaired Pointers are very affectionate
dogs, although they may be aloof with strangers. They are devoted
and somewhat protective of their families and especially enjoy children. |
